Auburn Community Hospital doubled as a life-saving healthcare institution and movie set within the past week, with the “star of the show” being high-tech equipment found in the Laboratory Services Department.
A film crew brought in by global medical equipment provider Abbott spent three days at Auburn Community Hospital, filming state-of-the-art lab equipment in use at ACH. They also interviewed hospital staff.

The lab equipment Abbott installed at Auburn Community Hospital is the first of its kind to be used in any hospital in the United States.
Minutes matter to saving lives concerning accurate, and just as important, timely lab results so that physicians can diagnose and treat patients.
This is one reason why Auburn Community Hospital was the first in the nation to invest in and install the Abbott Alinity h-series Hematology System in its Laboratory Services Department.
“The best medical technology in the world is being used to care for those we serve right here at Auburn Community Hospital,” said Auburn Community Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. James Syrett.
The Laboratory Services Department at ACH conducts 1.7 million tests per year. Abbott’s Alinity h-series Hematology System allows technicians to precisely count ten times more white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets in blood.
This high level of accuracy allows physicians to rule in and rule out potential diagnoses and treatment options for patients.
“We can find the ‘needle in a haystack’ thanks to this incredible technology. Our team of dedicated professionals reduced the turnaround time of getting test results to the Emergency Room to approximately 20.8 minutes. This high-tech blood analyzer saves lives and allows us give doctors accurate results in a timely manner,” said Auburn Community Hospital Laboratory Director John Bagenski.
It is estimated that 70-percent of all medical diagnoses and treatment decisions in a hospital are impacted by Laboratory Services. The blood analyzer, in use for more than one year at Auburn Community Hospital, is an important tool in saving lives.
“Physicians and health care providers heavily rely on our Lab for timely and accurate results. They need this important technological tool to diagnose and treat patients. Our Lab is crucial to providing the highest quality of care,” added Dr. Syrett.
The film crew spoke on camera to Auburn Community Hospital staff, took video of hospital equipment, and shot drone footage from high above ACH.
“We are first in the nation to utilize this impressive blood analyzer. It is quite an accomplishment for our Lab, our hospital, and Cayuga County community to be the first in America to maximize this technology to treat patients. Minutes matter and seconds are precious in saving a patient’s life,” concluded Auburn Community Hospital Core Laboratory Supervisor Jessica Giacona.
