Our new 12,000-square-foot cancer treatment center is conveniently located on the ACH campus in Auburn, New York. Here, patients will receive the highest level of multidisciplinary cancer care including hematology oncology, chemotherapy, diagnostics, radiation oncology, immunotherapies and screening.

Komal Akhtar, MD
Dr. Akhtar received her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada and completed her residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, in Internal Medicine. She completed a Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Hematology and Medical Oncology in 2021. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Sam Benjamin, MD
Dr. Benjamin is an oncologist in Syracuse, New York, Assistant Professor of Medicine & Medical Director of Upstate Cancer Center Adult Hematology/Oncology and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Upstate University Hospital and Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
Bernard Poiesz, MD
Dr. Poiesz is a Medical Oncology Specialist in Syracuse, NY and has over 49 years of experience in the medical field. Dr. Poiesz has extensive experience in Pancreatic Neoplasms, Blood Disorders, and Skeletal System Neoplasms. He graduated from University Of Pennsylvania / School Of Medicine in 1974. He is affiliated with medical facilities such as Oswego Hospital and Samaritan Medical Center.
Jared Deck, MD
Jared Deck, MD, received his undergraduate education from SUNY at Geneseo and completed his medical school training at SUNY Upstate Medical University. After a transitional internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dr. Deck returned to SUNY Upstate Medical University where he completed his residency training in radiation oncology and served as Chief Resident during his final two years of the program.
Dr. Deck is a faculty member of the Upstate University Radiation Oncology physician group as an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology. He has served in various committees and published research across a range of cancer types. Dr. Deck is currently a member of the SUNY Upstate and Auburn Community Hospital Radiation Oncology Committee that is responsible for operational readiness of the radiation oncology service at the newly built Upstate Cancer Center at Auburn.
Dr. Deck has been instrumental in working with senior leadership with all aspects of the radiation oncology service including recruitment of clinical support, technology procurement, policies and procedures, and operational structure with the goal of providing the highest quality cancer care to the Auburn community.
Dr. Deck will serve as the Chief Radiation Oncologist and the Medical Director for the radiation oncology service at the Upstate Cancer Center at Auburn.
Jeffrey Seeber, DABR
Jeff Seeber is a New York State Licensed, Board Certified Medical Physicist and Dosimetrist with a wealth of experience in developing and implementing innovative programs and services within radiation oncology departments. With a focus on clinical excellence, Jeff brings extensive expertise in a wide range of clinical and technical areas including: IMRT, IGRT, SRS, SBRT HDR, LDR, and Radiopharmaceutical Therapy.

We provide highly personalized and comprehensive care leveraging the knowledge and technology found at Upstate, the region’s only academic medical center. Our skilled nursing staff has special training in administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy as well as other advanced therapies to treat cancer and blood disorders. We also provide on-site phlebotomy and pharmacy services ensuring expedient lab results and drug delivery.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Upstate Medical University provides comprehensive, multimodality, patient-oriented care for all types and stages of cancer. Special attention is given to technological advancement, quality of life and education. Our physicians and staff are dedicated to providing the newest and most effective care to our patients while striving to blend compassion and technique in our care approach.
Our board certified physicians provide state of the art care to patients with hematology and cancer diagnoses. The Upstate Cancer Center is ranked in the top 20 percent of cancer care programs nationwide by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and it is the only program accredited by this organization in the 17-county area of central New York. Additionally, many of our Registered Nurses are certified in the specialty area of oncology (OCN).
Auburn Community Hospital delivers a full range of diagnostic imaging services utilizing different and advanced imaging technologies. Besides using the latest innovations in our digital imaging examination procedures, our facilities utilize state-of-the-art digital archiving (PACS) for all diagnostic imaging procedures to assure file and record integrity, access and confidentiality. Additionally, our PACS system provides a convenient way to share information relating to a particular case with specialists worldwide.

Ranked in the top twenty percent of cancer care programs nationwide by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS CoC), it is the only program accredited by this organization in Central New York. It is also among the one percent of ACOS CoC accredited cancer programs nationally to have earned the Outstanding Achievement Award for four consecutive survey cycles.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Upstate Cancer Center has been accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) demonstrating an indication of high quality among the Radiation Oncology community.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Upstate University Hospital has been accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for the past 10 years. More than 800 bone marrow transplants have been performed for conditions such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia and select solid tumors. The program performs both autologous and matched related allogeneic transplants.
