Auburn Community Hospital, originally established as Auburn City Hospital, founded its first nursing training school in 1887. It became the fourth school in New York State to register with the New York State Department of Education and Board of Regents within its first decade. This marked a significant milestone in the hospital’s nursing standards and its history.

Recognition Of Our Employees Is Important To Us
The DAISY Foundation was established in November 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away at the age of 33 due to complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The nursing care that Patrick received during his hospitalization deeply touched his family, prompting them to create a means of expressing gratitude for nurses who deliver exceptional and compassionate care.
The Auburn Nursing Department is committed to fostering a healthy work environment that acknowledges the expertise our nursing team brings to the hospital. Recognizing our nurses in a personalized and meaningful manner is our priority. Our aim is to bestow well-deserved honors, enhancing the sense of value and fulfillment among our nursing staff.
This is why Auburn Community Hospital joined the Daisy Foundation, a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers.

Nurse Residency Program
The Nurse Residency Program (NRP) is designed to facilitate the transition of new nurses from graduates to professionals. Our program provides a standardized approach to acquainting new nurses with the demands of a nursing career in a structured and educational manner. Emphasizing the enhancement of decision-making skills in high-pressure situations and clinical leadership development, the program aims to incorporate nurse education into real-life practices.
Following the curriculum developed by Vizient and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), NRP strives to empower new graduates and nurse residents, nurturing the skills and confidence required for a seamless transition into their clinical roles and professional environment. This evidence-based curriculum is designed to minimize turnover, enhance decision-making skills, and improve clinical and leadership abilities.

Student Nurse Extern Program
As a nursing student, you can start your journey to a fulfilling career in health care! Our Student Nurse Externship program is designed to offer 1:1 clinical training with experienced health care providers while creating a pathway for student nurses to gain experience in inpatient and specialty areas. The program also focuses on expanding knowledge of hospital practice and policy, resulting in increased confidence to provide patient care.
Requirements:
- Be enrolled in a nationally accredited pre-licensure (RN) nursing program
- Completed one semester of clinical experience
- GPA of at least 3.0
- Be available for the mandatory orientation the week of May 19, 2025.
- Commit at least 4-8 hours weekly
- Rate of Pay: $20/hourly; per diem

What is the Student Nurse Extern Program at Auburn Community Hospital?

The program also focuses on expanding knowledge of hospital practice and policy, resulting in increased confidence to provide patient care.
Who is eligible to apply for the program?
A nursing student who is enrolled in a nationally accredited pre-licensure (RN) nursing program, with at least a 3.0 GPA and who has completed one semester of clinical experience.
How do I apply?
The General Application can be found on Auburn Community Hospital’s website. We will accept applications during the month of March. Any application submitted later than March 31 will not be considered. You must list at least 2 professional references.
When does the program start and end?
The Student Nurse Extern Program begins with hospital orientation on Monday, May 19, 2025 at 8am. Then, required clinical orientation days on Tuesday & Wednesday, 7am-3pm. You will coordinate with the Professional Practice Department to schedule 4-8 hours per week through the end of the program, typically around mid-August (based on the start of the Fall semester). At that time, you may choose to transfer to a per diem Patient Care Assistant position.

Our Nursing Mentorship Program is a vital initiative for fostering growth and support within our nursing community. Mentors provide a cornerstone of assurance for new nurses. They offer a sense of care and a reminder that challenges are not faced alone in the day-to-day complexities of healthcare. The program creates a supportive environment, ensuring a positive entry into the hospital for new nurses.
At the core of our mentorship philosophy is the belief that a mentor should provide a realistic view of challenges while emphasizing the collaborative spirit required to overcome them. Our mentors focus on instilling a positive outlook, promoting teamwork, and ensuring the delivery of excellent patient care.
Our goal is to strike a balance between meeting patient needs and providing an environment for mentees to learn and grow. We understand that mentorship is not about perfection but centers on being supportive, positive, and serving as a role model—a true reflection of caring and competent nursing.
Our nursing specialties are available to support all medical services available at the hospital. We offer our nurses Advanced Cardiac Life Support training and TNCC, ENPC, NALS, PALS, PEARS and Chemotherapy Certification.

The Auburn Nursing Department actively collaborates with Cayuga Community College (CCC) to provide an exceptional platform for nursing education, including a dynamic setting where students engage in hands-on clinical work. Recognized as one of the top degree programs in New York State, CCC’s nursing program has produced numerous graduates who have chosen to become valued members of the ACH nursing team.
